Beginning Paper Piecing

Learn paper piecing techniques while making a New York Beauty Table Runner or the Lilly Log Cabin.
The picture shows a table runner rendition that was assembled using a download of four New York Beauty quilt blocks by HumburgCreations on Etsy. Malina will not be sharing the download but will print the pieces for you to use during class. The class is focused on paper piecing techniques rather than the pattern, so you may bring your own pattern to the class if you'd like!

As designed this runner finishes at 14"x50". You can make it a little narrower and shorter by changing the sashing size or eliminating one of the blocks. You can also turn it into a quilt by finding more block patterns to add to these four, or by downloading the pattern for your own use and make as many of these blocks as your heart desires! Malina's creating the class sample using six fabrics, but you may choose to use as many as you'd like.
Yardages calculated for purchase. Select nondirectional fabrics. You may be able to get what you need from irregular pieces in your stash, but the amount should be somewhat equal to the yardages below. Colors 1,3,5 and 6 need a piece that has an 11 inch square area to cut the bug pieces for the corners.
Fabric 1: Big color block fabric and 4 outside cornerstones ...1/3 yard
Fabric 2: Block fabric and 3 insice cornerstones...................1/4 yard
Fabric 3: Block fabric and 3 inside cornerstones ..................1/3 yard
Fabric 4: Lightest Block fabric............................................1/4 yard
Fabric 5: Block fabric and binding ......................................5/8 yard
Fabric 6: Block fabric .......................................................1/3 yard
Fabric 7: Sashing.............................................................1/3 yard
Backing: 7/8 yard
OR...Bring a riot of fabrics and use a bazillion! Just be sure you have four 11 inch square pieces.
Colors!!!

1. Use fabrics that make you happy.
2. Fabrics can be solids/batiks, prints, or a combination.
3. Get a variety of values in your fabrics, from lights to darks.
4. Limit yourself with prints to one medium and then much smaller prints. I have a medium and then two that are a little smaller and it's too busy. UNLESS your colors are all very different! Take a picture of the fabrics with your camera, mix them and take another (and again until every fabric has touched every fabric) and then squint at it. Can you see them distinctly? If not, switch one (or more) of them out.

Skill Level: Beginner
Skill Details: Advanced Beginner
Requirements: Before Class: Iron your fabrics if they're wrinkled. You don't want to spend an hour doing that in class. PLEASE BRING TO CLASS: Add a Quarter ruler, I use the 6" most often. I also own the 12", both come in handy! Tweezers (to help get the small bits of paper out of your seams) Glue stick (I use UHU stic in the big yellow cylinder, but any will do) Transparent tape (aka Scotch Tape) Markers or colored pencils to represent your fabrics by number on your papers (I used different colors to represent each of the 6 fabrics) Rotary cutter & small mat to have by your machine. Machine needles: if your using Batiks, you need to use Sharps, size 70 Fresh thread (old thread breaks easily and will not perform well in your project). I've seen paper piecing thread and tried it...it performed the same as regular thread. Not necessary! Basic sewing supplies (including sewing machine!) Other sewing tools that make you happy Snacks, water coffee, lunch (or you can pop out and pick lunch up; there are great lunch spots within walking distance)
